Diagnosis. D II-III 7-8; A II-III 6-7; V I-II (6)7-8; lateral line scales 38-41. Caudal peduncle short, laterally compressed, relatively deep, its least depth exceeds body thickness at last ray of anal fin. Vent closer to anal-fin beginning than to base of ventral fins. No epithelial crests on dorsal scales. Lower lip interrupted in the middle, no barbellike outgrowths at angles of mouth; barbels as a rule are short, not reaching anterior edge of eye (slightly reach beyond anterior edge of eye only in juveniles with TL less than 5 cm), their length about 5 times in head length. Paired fins of moderate length: pectoral fins never reaching base of ventral fins, usually (in specimens longer than 5 cm) cover less than 3/4 of pectoventral distance; ventral fins do not reach anal fin base as a rule (in specimens longer than 5 cm), cover less than 3/4 of ventroanal distance. There are large (more or less) round dark spots on body sides; several stripes of small dark spots on dorsal and caudal fins. Eye small, with its horizontal diameter usually not reaching 3/4 of interorbital width. Throat and breast (to front of line connecting posterior ends of bases of pectoral fins) are usually covered with scales; lateral branch of supra-orbital canal connected with infra-orbital canal passing in infra-orbitalia, pteroticum, and extrascapulare by cutaneous canaliculus. Commonly, eight pores in seismosensory supraorbital canal on frontal and parietal bones, four pores on pteroticum; 2n = 50, NF = 94, karyotype comprises 22 meta-, 22 submeta-, and 6 subtelo-acrocentric chromosomes (Ref. 56658). |
