This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: body with irregular red-brown patches and stripes, forming a marble-like mottled pattern in male; anal and caudal fins with slender yellow to amber subdistal band and broad dark brown distal band; head depth 80-84% HL; caudal peduncle length 152-159 in % of its depth; head length 25.5-30.9% SL; caudal peduncle length 152-159 in % of its depth; prepelvic length 45.5-46.7% SL; and head width 65.5-72.9 in % of its depth (Ref. 138275).
