This species is distinguished from its congeners by the presence of an adipose fin (vs. absence); differs further from P. ariel and P. pygmaeus by the pelvic-fin rays i,6 with i,5 rare (vs. i,5); postcleithra 2 present (vs absent); differs further from P. ariel by having a shorter caudal peduncle 14-18 % SL (vs. 18- 24 % SL) (Ref. 128819).
