Taxonomic Remarks
A population in the South Black Sea that has alternatively and repetitively been considered as a subspecies or a synonym of 2 species, or a valid species. Although more published taxonomic evidence (morphological or genetic) would be required, following several authors, the species is considered valid here for conservation purposes. But it may represent an ecomorph only. Probably a case of speciation at the edge of distribution of the ancestral species.
