Etymology: Crenicichla: Latin, crenulatus = cut, clipped + Greek, kichle = wrasse (Ref. 45335); ama: Name 'ama' from a Guaraní word meaning 'rain', in allusion to the small diagnostic spots below midlateral blotches which appear as if rain (spots) is falling from clouds (midlateral blotches). A noun in apposition.
