Etymology: Hongshuia: Named for its Chinese type locality, ‘Pao Li,’; noun in apposition; boulobos: Name 'boulobos' from the Greek words 'bou' and 'lobos', meaning 'large' and 'lobe', in reference to the large lateral lobes of the lower lip of the new species.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: lower lip with larger lateral lobes (width more than the median lobe width); sector-shaped median lobe of lower lip; caudal peduncle (16.0-18.6% SL); maxillary barbels (37.7-71.5% eye diameter); and greatly protruded peripheral part of median lobe of lower lip (Ref. 138665).
