Etymology: Claea: Named for the Oreiad nymph of a sacred cave on Mount Kalathion in Messenia; dafangensis: Name 'dafangensis' from the type locality of the new species, Dafang County.
Eponymy: In Greek mythology, Claea was a nymph of a sacred cave on Mount Kalathion in Messenia in the Peloponnese. Kottelat chose this nymph’s name to replace another ‘nymph’ name – Oreias Sauvage, 1874 – which name was pre-occupied. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: processus dentiformis prominent, covering lower jaw when mouth shut; presence of body pigmentation, eyes normal, with diameter 10.9-21.0% of head length (HL); tip of maxillary barbel reaching the posterior margin of eyes; 8-9 branched pectoral-fin rays; caudal-peduncle depth 6.1-8.7% SL; 16 branched caudal-fin rays; interorbital width 23.6-39.0% HL; outrostral barbel backward extending beyond the anterior nostrils; and anal fin base length 4.0-5.5% SL (Ref. 138730).
