Etymology: Loricaria: Latin, lorica, loricare = cuirass of corslet of leather; 1706 + Greek, ichthys = fish (Ref. 45335); catirina: Name 'catirina' in honor of Catirina, one of the main characters of the Bumba Meu Boi folkloric festival, a traditional cultural expression from the state of Maranhao, northeastern Brazil.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: polygonal present, clearly separated plates in central abdominal region, interspersed by areas of naked skin and pectoral girdle covered by large, widely spaced plates; basicaudal plate length (16.8%-27.6% of HL); oral papillae (14-16); shallow, rounded postorbital notch; body size (over 150 mm SL); number of lateral plates (33-34); poorly developed odontodes on predorsal plates; shallow, rounded postorbital notch present; basicaudal plate length greater than interorbital width; number of oral papillae (14-16); minimum orbital diameter (14.9-20.2%); and inter-nostril distance (17.1-20.8%) (Ref. 138733).
