Etymology: Oreichthys: Latin, aurum = gold + Greek, ichthys = fish (Ref. 45335)elianae: Name 'elianae' in honor of Eliana, daughter of late Limaakum, who collected the type series.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: prominent, large black blotch on caudal-fin base; black spot on the anal fin absent; branched rays on pelvic fin (8); scales in longitudinal series (19 + 1); caudal peduncle (21.9-31.8% SL); incomplete lateral line and fewer scales in longitudinal series (19 + 1); pored lateral-line scales (5); pores on cheek (14-15); pre-dorsal scales (9); distinct concave notch on predorsal profile present; bright red dorsal, ventral and anal fins; and concave dorsoposterior margin of dorsal fin (Ref. 138710).
