This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: body slender, SL 3.6?3.7 times body depth; second body stripe dipping well below lateral line beneath base of spinous dorsal fin; fourth dorsal-fin spine 1.2?1.3 times longer than third; anterior portion of nape, chest region and bases of pectoral fins all covered with cycloid scales; tip of adpressed pelvic fin extending well beyond midpoint of origins of pelvic and anal fins; distance from eye margin to angle of peropercle 3.0?3.2 in HL; anal-fin base 2.0 in HL; suborbital width 9.1?10.0 in HL; and 4 blackish yellow stripes on caudal fin (Ref. 138806).
