Dorsal spines (total): 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 8 - 10; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 7 - 9; Vertebrae: 27. This species is distinguished from all its congeners except R. szechuanensis by the following set of characters:no sensory canals and sensory pores on head; cheeks and operculum, no spots or stripes; it differs from R. szechuanensis with the second dorsal fin with 9-11, longitudinal rows of inverted V-shaped or dash-like brown markings (vs. with blue spots, some coalescing into vertical bars), incomplete brownish edges on flank scales below
second dorsal fin (vs. complete edges), and a bright-yellow branchiostegal membrane (vs. white or blue) (Ref. 138923).
Body shape (shape guide): elongated; Cross section: oval.
This species occurs in pebble-bottomed sections of cold, flowing rivers. It is in sympatry with Acheilognathus mengyangensis, Gobiocypris rarus, Yunnanilus jiuchiensis, Opsariichthys chengtui and Belligobio pengxianensis. In the Minjiang River basin, it is occasionally occurs in sympatry with Rhinogobius szechuanensis which has not been recorded from the Tuojiang River basin (Ref. 138923).
