Etymology: Rhinogobius: Greek, rhinos = nose + Latin, gobius = gudgeon (Ref. 45335); aonumai: Named after Dr. Yoshimasa Aonuma, who was the pioneer in the taxonomic study of the genus Rhinogobius in the Ryukyu Islands.
