This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: eye-in-snout length of < 1.8; lateral vomerine tooth patch broad; presence of medial vomerine tooth patch visible in some specimens; lateral-line scales with two pores; scale rows above the lateral line; absence of filamentous ray on caudal fin; spinous- and soft-dorsal-fin membrane transparent; and peritoneum wholly dark (Ref. 138972).
