It differs from M. copei by 19-24 branched anal-fin rays (vs. 15-17 in M. copei); and from M. collettii by the possession of more conspicuous and wider longitudinal lateral dark stripe, about a scale deep along the flank (vs. stripe narrow, more restricted to the posterior half of the horizontal septum).
