Espinhos dorsais (total) : 2; Raios dorsais (total) : 8 - 9; Raios anais : 6 - 7; Vértebras: 21 - 22. This species is distinguished by the following characters: typically having the posterior margin of pectoral-fin spine only with perpendicularly directed serrations, with some specimens variably presenting some serrations smoothly bent towards the tip of the spine; presence of contact between the parieto-supraoccipital and nuchal plate; with a fold in the middle portion of the lower lip. Colouration: along flank midline are longitudinal series of 3-5 moderate-to large-sized dark brown or black blotches; some specimens have coalescent blotches, forming a wide and irregular stripe; anterior portion of dorsal fin with conspicuous concentration of dark brown or black chromatophores, not forming small dark markings; pectoral fin with conspicuous concentration of dark brown or black chromatophores, not forming small dark markings; caudal-fin lobes with conspicuous dark brown or black bands; absence of a dark brown or black bar crossing the orbit (Ref. 138497).
Body shape (shape guide): fusiform / normal; Cross section: compressed.
Facultative air-breathing (Ref. 126274); Found in ponds (Ref. 11229). Feeds on worms, crustaceans, insects and plant matter (Ref. 7020). Aquarium keeping: in groups of 5 or more individuals; minimum aquarium size 60 cm (Ref. 51539).

The female holds 2-4 eggs between her pelvic fins, where the male fertilizes them for about 30 seconds. Only then the female swims to a suitable spot, where she attaches the very sticky eggs. The pair repeats this process until about 100 eggs have been fertilized and attached (Ref. 1672).
