Etymology: Amblyeleotris: Greek, amblys = darkness + The name of a Nile fish, eleotris (Ref. 45335); sungami: Named for Prof. Magnus, spelled backwards (Ref. 11441).

Western Indian Ocean: Red Sea to Seychelles; probably more widespread in the Indo-West Pacific.

Anal soft rays: 13. This species is distinguished by the following set of characters: anal soft rays 13; caudal fin length 2.25-2.7 in SL; numerous small pale-blue spots and occasional small orange-yellow spots on white spaces between orange-red bars on body (Ref. 82599).
Body shape (shape guide): elongated.
Occurs on open sand bottoms of clear water reefs (Ref. 9710). Lives with alphaeid shrimps in burrows.
