Etymology: Priolepis: Greek, prio = to saw + Greek,lepis = scale (Ref. 45335); boreus: Origin of name not given but presumably from the Greek 'boreas' meaning north wind or north, referring to its presence in the NW Pacific OR might mean a 'mullet' to which this species hase a tenuous resemblance.

This species is distinguished by the following characters: no fraenum; no scales on breast and belly, body scales begin at the midlateral region below the first dorsal fin and fanning out posteriorly to form a wedge shape; head bars not merging (Ref. 9018).
