Etymology: Parapolynemus: Greek, para = near + Greek, poly = a lot of + Greek, nema = filament (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Captain the Honorary Foley Charles Prendergast Vereker (1850–1900) was a British naval officer on HMS Myrmidon during a surveying expedition in North-west Australia. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Espinas dorsales (total) : 9; Radios blandos dorsales (total) : 11 - 14; Espinas anales: 3; Radios blandos anales: 10 - 12; Vértebra: 24. Six to seven pectoral filaments below pectoral fin, the fifth filament from the ventralmost, longest, may extend beyond caudal fin. Body and head yellow, shaded with black dorsally; fins bright orange, pectoral filaments intense vermilion (Ref. 9685).
Adults inhabit muddy estuaries and lower part of rivers (Ref. 9685). One of the smallest members of the family Polynemidae (Ref. 57343).
