Etymology: Gigantactis: Greek, 'gigas' or 'gigantos' = gigantic + Greek, 'aktis' = ray (referring to the unusually long first dorsal-fin spine that functions as a lure in this genus) (Ref. 86949).

Dorsale zachte stralen (totaal) : 6 - 7; Anale zachte stralen: 6 - 7. Metamorphosed females distinguished by the following characteristics: have branched distal escal filaments, 3 slender filaments on and below anterior margin of escal bulb, and several similar filaments on and below posterior margin of escal bulb; length of illicium 175-200% SL; escal papillae absent; relatively long dentary teeth (largest 4.0-4.5% SL), arranged in two, possibly three, very irregular longitudinal series; caudal fin rays less than 35% SL (Ref. 86949).
