Etymology: Danakilia: Ethiopia desert; for Thysvander Audenaerde (1968) it is a fish from northeast Africa.
Eponymy: Baron Raimondo Franchetti (1889–1935) was a wealthy Italian explorer and adventurer. He organised the expedition that collected the cichlid holotype at his own expense. He was killed in a plane crash in the Egyptian desert. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Scales of chest and belly very small, non-imbrication but contiguous. Scales of flank with rugose calculi in the exposed part. Scales on cheek in 2 or 3 series. No micro-branchiospines.
