Etymology: Pethia: Pethia is the generic vernacular name for small cyprinids in Sinhala.
Eponymy: Ranjith Bandula, who is a collector of ornamental fishes, discovered the eponymous species near Galapitamada, Sri Lanka (1987) and gave the holotype to Rodney Jonklaas (q. [...] (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Inhabits small, rocky stream flowing through rice field and rubber plantation (Ref. 11966). Found under leaves and among emersed vegetation in shallow water (<20 cm) on the margins of the stream.
