Etymology: Oregonichthys: The state of Oregon in USA? + ichthys; kalawatseti: Named after the Kalawatset, a tidewater Umpqua people (Oregon) best known for attacking Jedidiah H. Smith in 1828. The name is a patronym and genitive singular (Ref. 39605).
Eponymy: This is not a true eponym in that the Kalawatset were a native Umpqua people who lived in Oregon, USA. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Oregonichthys kalawatseti is very similar to O. crameri but can be distinguished by having unscaled or partly scaled breast, slightly subterminal mouth, and 34-40 scales on lateral line (Ref. 86798).
Adults inhabit sluggish sand- and gravel-bottomed runs, pools and backwaters of creeks and small rivers as well as sloughs. They are usually found near vegetations (Ref. 86798). Migratory behaviour is undetermined (Ref. 126106).
