Etymology: Kronoheros: Named for Kronos (Greek: Κρόνος, krónos), th, leader of the first generation of Titans (descendants of Uranus and Gaia) in combination with the old cichlid genus name Heros (meaning hero). The name Kronoheros given to the cichlid that attains the largest body size among Neotropical cichlids.
Eponymy: In Greek mythology, Kronos (or Cronus) was leader of the Titans and father of Zeus. The name alludes to Kronoheros umbrifer being the largest Neotropical cichlid. The name is combined with Heros, an old name used for various Neotropical cichlids. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

An open water swimmer. Feeds mainly on other live fishes, usually the prolific Astyanax, but also on shrimps and crabs (Ref. 36377). Eggs and larvae are guarded by the female (Ref. 40602). Male defends the territory (Ref. 40602).
