North America: St. Lawrence-Great Lakes, Hudson Bay and Mississippi River basins from Quebec in Canada and Vermont in the USA to Manitoba in Canada, and south to Gulf; from James River in Virginia to Neuse River in North Carolina, USA; from Mobile Bay in Georgia and Alabama to Nueces River in Texas, USA.

Adults inhabis sandy pools of headwaters, creeks and small to large rivers. Also found in quiet areas of lakes (Ref. 5723, 10294). They feed on microcrustacea, midge larvae and pupae, and some terrestrial insects (Ref. 10294). Migratory behaviour is undetermined (Ref. 126106). Very similar to Notropis cahabae (Ref. 5723).
