North America: Lahontan and other interior basins in northern Nevada and northern California, USA including Humboldt, Walker, Carson, Truckee, Susan, Quinn and Reese River systems; Walker, Tahoe and Pyramid Lakes. Introduced elsewhere, including upper Sacramento River systems in California.

Adults occur in margin of lakes and all types of stream habitats but usually in pools and slow runs (Ref. 86798). Migratory behaviour is undetermined (Ref. 126106).
