Etymology: Etheostoma: Greek, etheo = to strain + Greek, stoma = mouth; Rafinesque said "various mouths", but Jordan and Evermann suggest the name might have been intended as "Heterostoma (Ref. 45335); histrio: histrio meaning harlequin, referring to the mask-like facial pigmentation (Ref. 10294).

Inhabits sand and gravel runs of small to medium rivers, usually near debris (Ref. 5723, 10294). Feeds on midge, blackfly, and caddisfly larvae, and mayfly nymphs (Ref. 10294).
