Central and South America: Río Magdalena drainage, Colombia on the Atlantic drainage to the Río Cocle del Norte, Panama. On the Pacific side, it is known from the Río Dagua, Colombia, to the Río Grande de Térraba drainage in Costa Rica.

Facultative air-breathing (Ref. 126274); Inhabits brooks and creeks of low to moderate current velocity, between 20 and 2500 m elevation. Eats aquatic insects.
