Etymology: Fonchiiichthys: Perhaps after Fonchi Chang, ichthyologist at Natural History Museum, Perú. She died in an expedition to Pastaza river, northern Perú in August, 2000.
Eponymy: Fonchi Ingrid Chang Matzunaga, Peruvian ichthyologist (1963–1999). (See Chang) (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
