Etymology: Hypostomus: Greek, hypo = under + Greek, stoma = mouth (Ref. 45335).

Taxonomic Remarks
Last redescription and biology in Le Bail et al. (2000:260). Mitochondrial D-loop sequences used in a molecular phylogeny of Hypostomus and related genera by Montoya-Burgos and Weber (in press, fig 2; EMBL/GenBank AJ318362 to AJ318364). Biology: Seems to be the unique species of Hypostomus living in brackish waters.

Can be caught along the banks with muddy bottom occupied by plants like Laguncularia racemosa, Avicennia germinans and Rhizophora mangle Ref. 35381). Benthic (Ref. 58302). As part of its reproductive behavior, excavates and creates burrows for egg laying (Ref. 82067).
