Etymology: Etheostoma: Greek, etheo = to strain + Greek, stoma = mouth; Rafinesque said "various mouths", but Jordan and Evermann suggest the name might have been intended as "Heterostoma (Ref. 45335).

Body shape (shape guide): elongated.
Adults occur in habitats with moderate turbulence over gravel and small cobble substrate. They seem to concentrate in vegetated areas when present. Also found in eddying currents along vegetated or cobble shorelines (Ref. 26684).
