Etymology: Pyrrhulina: Greek, pyrrhos = red, with the colour of the fire (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: August Obermüller was credited by Myers as being the person who introduced him to South American characins, at Obermüller’s aquarium business in Jersey City, New Jersey. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Taxonomic Remarks
P. obermülleri is a handsome relative of P. brevis with much red on the fins and body and a dark horizontal band across the body. Marilyn Weitzman, pers. comm., Eschmeyer, 1998:1210; Ortega and Vari, 1986:11. [= Pyrrhulina brevis lugubris, Géry, 1977:138; Lüling, 1979:296].
