Etymology: Chocoheros: Named for the Embera-Wounaan indigenous tribe, known also as the Chocó (name derived from their language, in combination with the old cichlid genus name Heros (meaning hero). Chocó is also the well known biogeographic area and area of endemism encompassing the distribution of the genus. The name is to be understood as the hero of the Choco.

Taxonomic Remarks
The generic allocation of this species is still uncertain. It belongs to the tribe Heroini, but is maintained as an incertae sedis species of Cichlasoma pending a revision of heroin cichlids traditionally assigned to the cichlasomatin genus Cichlasoma.
