Etymology: Pempheris: Greek, pempheris = the name of a fish (Ref. 45335); ypsilychnus: The specific name is a combination of ypsilon, the Greek letter Y, and lychnos, Greek for lamp or light (Ref. 27767). This combination alludes to the Y-shaped posterior organ that is visible through the body wall (Ref. 27767).

marien demersaal; diepte 1 - 24 m (Ref. 27767). Tropical
Indo-West Pacific: northern Australia. The southernmost record on the east coast, Moreton Bay near Brisbane, which was reported as Pempheris klunzingeri was a misidentification.
