Etymology: Heterocheirodon: Greek, heteros = other + Greek, cheir = hand + Greek, odous = teeth (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: This may look like an eponym but instead is a word derived from the Guaraní for palm tree. It refers to Butia yatay, a palm tree dominant at the type locality which is in Entre Ríos, Argentina. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
