Adults inhabit outer slope of reef, seagrass bed, and small coral heads (Ref. 649). They are secretive species occurring on coral reefs where it hides among soft corals and benthic algae (Ref. 2334). They feed on benthic invertebrates. Monogamous and always in home-ranging pairs, that is they do not defend an exclusive territory (Ref. 52884). Population from Western Indian Ocean and Red Sea may be different species from fishes from the Pacific; genetic studies are needed (Ref. 90102).
