背的軟條 (總數) : 78; 臀鰭軟條: 58. M. herringi differs from the other species of the genus by the following combination of characters: head long with elongate, pointed snout, skull length 6.4% TL, rostral fang strongly hooked with distal part in a nearly right angle to dorsal profile of skull, anal fin origin below myomere number 28, and no lateral, subdermal spots of pigmentation.
Body shape (shape guide): eel-like.
M. herringi 在組合特徵之後有別於本屬的另一個種藉由: 頭部長的有細長的, 尖的吻,頭蓋骨長度 6.4% TL, 嘴的尖牙強烈地以末梢部的部份鉤住在一幾乎對頭蓋骨的背面輪廓的直角, 在 28 號 myomere, 與顏色的沒有側面又皮下斑點之下的臀鰭起源。
