Etymology: Priolepis: Greek, prio = to saw + Greek,lepis = scale (Ref. 45335); limbatosquamis: Name from Latin limbus meaning 'an edge' and squama for scale; presumably referring to the chromatophores outlining the scale pockets (Ref. 10753).

This species differs in having the following characters: prominent, dark-edged, pupil-diameter light band, starting under the pectoral-fin base and continuing across the nape; low ray counts, dorsal-fin with 9 and anal-fin with 8; posterior nasal opening 2-3 times the diameter of the anterior opening; reduced number of sensory papillae in the paired longitudinal nasal-interorbital row, 3 or 4 per row (vs. 5-7 per row) (Ref. 10753).
