Etymology: Serpenticobitis: Latin, serpens = serpent + see under Cobitis; octozona: Specific epithet from the Latin octo which means eight and zona which means belt or girdle.

Rückenflossenweichstrahlen (insgesamt) : 11 - 12; Afterflossenweichstrahlen: 8; Wirbelzahl: 33 - 35. Distinguished mainly by its coloration, with 8-9 thin pale complete bands on a dark background. Predorsal scales 37-42; and transverse scale rows 16-20/1/12-14 (Ref. 38649).
Body shape (shape guide): elongated.
Occurs in clear, high gradient mountain streams with very swift current, large boulders and rich and diverse fish faunas. Also found in other habitats such as with quite rocky bottom and equally high fish diversity and with a more unstable gravelly bottom and much less fish diversity.
