Etymology: Gnathophis: Greek, gnathos = jaw + Greek, ophis = serpent (Ref. 45335); tritos: tritos = third, i.e., the third species of Gnathophis discovered in the western Atlantic.

Vertèbres: 136 - 138. Shorter air bladder compared to the other two western Atlantic species - G. bathytopos and G. bracheatopos. Differs from the former in lacking the extra several elevated lateral-line pores, having only one or two postorbital pores, only five supraorbital pores, only nine preoperculomandibular pores, and having a pale stomach.
