Etymology: Stenogobius: Greek, stenos = narrow + Latin, gobius = gudgeon (Ref. 45335); hoesei: Named in honor of Douglass F. Hoese for his contributions to gobioid systematics and for his encouragement throughout the course of this study.

Predorsal midline almost always with naked patches, four to 18 scales; pectoral base almost always naked; opercle almost always naked, breast naked, third and fourth spines of 1st dorsal fin may be slightly filamentous on males, body anteriorly, head and pectoral fins dusky in both sexes.
