Raios dorsais (total) : 7 - 9; Raios anais : 8 - 12; Vértebras: 35 - 37. Body deep. Nuptial males with greatly elevated dorsal and anal fins and a distal black caudal spot, deeper than long or vertically oval. Anal fin, when depressed, reaches to or beyond caudal fin base.
Body shape (shape guide): elongated; Cross section: compressed.
Adults inhabit sand-bottomed and silt-bottomed pools and runs of headwaters, creeks, and small rivers, They are usually found along undercut banks and debris (Ref. 86798). Migratory behaviour is undetermined (Ref. 126106).
