Etymology: Callionymus: Greek, kallion, comparative of kallos = beautiful + Greek, onyma = name; with a better name.
Eponymy: Dirk François Schaap (1816–1864) was a Dutch colonial administrator in Indonesia who became Resident at Bangka, Sumatra, Dutch East Indies; the type locality of this species. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
