Juveniles and females similar to several other species and identification depends on the presence of a male that has a long dorsal filament and red anal fin, latter may look black in natural light (Ref. 48636).
Body shape (shape guide): fusiform / normal.
Occurs on open hard-bottom substrates with algae and sparse coral growth, usually in strong current zones. Juveniles and females in small groups, sometimes with several males of which largest is dominating (Ref. 48636).
