Etymology: Plectranthias: Bleeker (1873) disagrees with the generic placement of Plectropoma anthioides by Günther. He, therefore, erected Plectranthias to accommodate Pl. anthioides. The name is presumably the combination of the first part of Plectropoma (plectrum), and anthias. Plectrum = Plektron = πλῆκτρον (Greek, plektron = anyhting to strike with, spur + Greek, anthias = a fish, Ref. 45335); jothyi: Named for Alexander A. Jothy.

背棘 (总数) : 10; 背的软条 (总数) : 17 - 18; 臀棘: 3; 臀鳍软条: 7; 脊椎骨: 26. Upper half of body with 6 oblique dark bars, the 2 posterior bars narrow. Oblique rows of scales on cheek 7; scales dorsally on head extending forward to midinterorbital space; no scales on maxilla nor ventrally on head. Posterior , margin of preopercle serrate, the ventral margin with 2 antrorse spines; subopercle and interopercle not serrate. Caudal fin slightly emarginate with prolonged upper lobe (Ref. 26833).
