Etymology: Scopelarchus: Greek, skopelos = a lantern fish + Greek, archos = anus (Ref. 45335); stephensi: Named for John S. Stephen Jr. in recognition of his numerous contributions to the biology of fishes and to the eduction of scientists (Ref. 40783).
Eponymy: Dr John Stewart Stephens Jr (d: 1932) is Professor Emeritus (1993) of Environmental Biology, Occidental College, Los Angeles where he was on the faculty (1959–2003), and Executive Director (1995) of the Vantuna Research Group there, which he founded [...] (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Pigment on pectoral fin limited to a narrow patch of melanophores between 2nd and 6th or 7th pectoral rays on medial third of length of fin; appressed pectoral reaching to pelvic insertion but not to anus; caudal fin depth 7.9-9.2 SL (Ref. 40783).
