Etymology: Pseudoscopelus: Greek, pseudes = false + Greek, skopelos = a lantern fish (Ref. 45335). Lütken did not recognize the presence of photophores on the body, confusing them with pores, but referred to a genus of lanternfish (Scopelus now Myctophum) when he named the genus (Ref. 85782); parini: Named for Nikolay V. Parin.
Eponymy: Professor Dr Nikolai Vasilyevich Parin (1932–2012) of the P. [...] (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Diagnosis: Lacks photophores, with light coloration of the bucco-branchial cavity; no teeth on tongue; about 5 widely dispersed on the palatunum; 4 rows of teeth on the praemaxillare and dentale, divided by distinct gaps, and with a long upper jaw (Ref. 57779).
