Etymology: Knipowitschia: Because of N.M.Knipowitsch, a zoologist and Russian ichthyologist from the Academy of Sciences. Expeditions in "Pomor" and "Pervosvanniy" ships to Azov and Black sea (1898-1908).

背棘 (总数) : 6 - 8; 背的软条 (总数) : 7 - 9; 臀棘: 1; 臀鳍软条: 7 - 9; 脊椎骨: 30 - 32. Anterior oculoscapular and preopercular head canals present; scales mostly restricted to axillary patch, but with scattered scales along lateral midline of caudal peduncle. Males with numerous thin vertical striae on flank.
Body shape (shape guide): fusiform / normal.
