Etymology: Pethia: Pethia is the generic vernacular name for small cyprinids in Sinhala; macrogramma: Named from the Greek makros (long), and gramme (line), in reference to the complete or almost complete lateral line, in constrast to most other members of the Puntius conchonius group, which have an abbreviated, short lateral line.

Rückenflossenweichstrahlen (insgesamt) : 11 - 12; Afterflossenweichstrahlen: 8. Belongs to the Puntius conchonius group, distinguished by the combination of the following characters: barbels absent, lateral line complete or almost complete, a minute humeral mark present on and below lateral line scale 3, and transverse scale count ½4/1/4½ (vs. ½4/1/3½ or ½3/1/4½ in other species of Puntius conchonius group). This is similar to Puntius stoliczkanus, but humeral mark much smaller (Ref. 75627).
Body shape (shape guide): short and / or deep.
A ripe female specimen measuring 4.96 cm SL has eggs in single ovary, with egg size up to 0.6 mm in diameter (Ref. 75627).
