Spine dorsali (totale) : 1; Raggi dorsali molli (totale) : 8 - 9; Spine anali: 1 - 2; Raggi anali molli: 24 - 26. This species is a member of the Betta pugnax group with the following characters: a comparatively deep-bodied species, body depth at dorsal-fin base 31.4-35.0 % of SL; differs from its congeners in having a head length of 30.0-33.6% of SL, caudal fin with transverse bars, presence of chin-bar and second postorbital stripe, A 26, lateral scales 29-31 (mode 30), lanceolate caudal fin, absence of a broad dark marginal band on anal or caudal fin (Ref. 78499).
Body shape (shape guide): fusiform / normal.
Facultative air-breathing (Ref. 126274); The type locality was described as a small river with current (0.4 m/s); ground formed by gravel and in parts by sand. The fighting fishes were found at the banks, slower current , between roots and plants (Araceae). Water data as described: pH 5.8-6.3, 30-52 µS/cm, 23.3-
24.2 °C. Type specimens in February 2005 with pH 6.3, electric conductivity 51 µS/cm and water-temperature 25.5 °C (Ref. 78499).
