Etymology: Japigny: Named for the river Japigny, a tributary of Approuague River in French Guiana, where the species was first found. Defined as feminine noun; kirschbaum: Named for Dr. Frank Kirschbaum, a specialist of Gymnotiform fishes who has obtained experimental spawning and breeding of several gymnotid species. A noun in apposition.

Raggi anali molli: 132 - 164; Vertebre: 70 - 82. Can be distinguished by having the following characters: seven to eight dark and clear alternating wide vertical bands on body; a foramen in the scapula; 14-15 precaudal vertebrae; 132-164 anal-fin rays (vs. more than 160 in all known Sternopygids); snout short (less than one third heald length); and mouth subterminal (Ref. 86967).
Caught with Anostomus brevior and Cynopotamus essequibensis (Ref. 86967).
